Arabica vs Robusta: an Indian coffee drinker's guide

The two species behind almost every cup, and why India does both unusually well.

Updated 4 July 2026

Nearly all coffee comes from two species: Arabica and Robusta (Coffea canephora). They taste different, grow differently, and cost differently. India is one of very few origins celebrated for both — which is why understanding the two makes a real difference to what you buy.

Arabica: smoother and more aromatic

Arabica grows at higher altitudes and cooler temperatures. It has a brighter acidity, a smoother body, and a wider, more nuanced range of flavours — chocolate, nuts, fruit, florals. It is more delicate to grow and more susceptible to pests, which is part of why it costs more. Most specialty and single-origin coffee you'll see is Arabica.

Robusta: bolder and stronger

Robusta is hardier, grows at lower altitudes, and carries almost double the caffeine of Arabica. It brews a heavier, more bitter, more intense cup with a thick crema — which is why it's prized in espresso blends and in strong South Indian filter coffee. Traditionally seen as the 'lesser' species, that reputation is outdated in India.

Why India's Robusta is special

India is the world's benchmark for fine Robusta. Washed and monsooned Indian Robustas from Coorg, Chikmagalur and Wayanad are clean, smooth and full-bodied rather than harsh, and they win international awards. If you've only had bitter instant Robusta, a good Indian washed Robusta is a revelation.

Blends and filter coffee

Most South Indian filter coffee is an Arabica–Robusta blend (often with chicory), balancing Arabica's aroma with Robusta's body and strength. The classic ratios are 80:20 or 70:30 Arabica to Robusta. Espresso blends also lean on a little Robusta for crema and punch.

Which should you choose?

  • Want brightness, nuance, black coffee: choose Arabica.
  • Want strength, body, coffee with milk or a strong kick: choose Robusta or a blend.
  • Want the classic Indian cup: choose an Arabica–Robusta filter blend.

There's no 'better' species — only what suits your taste and brew. India lets you explore both at their best.
