What is peaberry coffee? (and who sells it in India)
The small round bean that coffee lovers seek out — explained.
Updated 4 July 2026
Peaberry is one of those coffee terms that sounds fancy but has a simple, natural explanation — and Indian estates produce some excellent examples.
What a peaberry actually is
A normal coffee cherry contains two flat-sided beans that grow facing each other. Occasionally, only one of the two seeds develops, growing into a single, small, round bean instead of two flat ones. That round bean is a peaberry. It happens naturally in roughly 5 to 10% of a harvest.
Why it's prized
Peaberries are separated out by hand or by machine because many believe the single bean concentrates the cherry's flavour and sugars, and its round shape roasts more evenly. The result is often a sweeter, brighter, more intense cup. Because it must be sorted from the rest of the harvest, peaberry usually commands a premium.
Does it taste better?
Not universally — but peaberry lots are frequently vibrant and clean, and they're a fun way to taste a familiar origin in a slightly different form. Indian peaberry, especially from Karnataka, is well regarded for its balance and body.
How to buy and brew it
Look for 'PB' or 'Peaberry' on the label. It shines as a black coffee in a pour over or French press, where its brightness and sweetness come through. Several Indian estates and roasters offer peaberry lots.
